Dogone
The death of a pet can be a major event for a child and the resulting conversation can be jolting to an adult. A friend had two young children and a dog named Patty.

One day Patty was hit by an automobile and killed while the children were at preschool. My friend wrung her hands over how to tell the children and then decided that a fortright statement would be best. The children returned from preschool and their mother said, "I have some bad news. Patty was hit by a car and killed." The children said that was too bad and went out to play.

They returned to the house and promptly began calling, "Patty! Here Patty, here girl." Their mother said, "Don't you remember? Patty is in heaven now." The children began sobbing uncontrollably and in between their sobs they said, "I thought you said daddy."
